Second Hand First

Along with picking up trash on beaches, shopping second hand has become a beloved hobby of mine. It’s the thrill of the hunt, the chase, not knowing what hidden gems you mind uncover.

You can find just about anything second hand and over the years I have collected some beloved treasures: a snow-flake wool sweater, a set of Japanese bowls living at a friends house, and more recently a pair of peach colored vans.

Shopping second hand is not only an opportunity to reduce, reuse, recycle; it allows for creative expression in the decoration of ones self and home on a serious budget. The financial freedom of shopping second hand allows me to experiment with a crazy print, a trend or explore a new favorite color without investing too many pennies in something that might not work out. Though more often than not I fall in love with the funky, unique items I find.

sometimes you just score, like with these babies: a strange combo of summer espadrille + bowling shoes

Today, most of my clothing is second hand and after years of very successful thrift shopping, there are many things I would almost never buy first hand: a t-shirt, sweatshirt, plant pots, vases, glassware, baskets, picture frames…at least I would have a gander at my local thrift stores first to see if there were any treasures to be found.

Look forward to a posts charing some of my most joyous thrift finds here on the Green Talk Blog.
